Play Therapy

Using the power of play to improve children’s confidence, social skills, emotional regulation and more.

Play therapy is a wonderful child centred approach that uses the power of play to assist children aged 3—12 years in a range of ways. Children are free to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions in a safe and secure environment. In the playroom children can use a range of specially selected toys to play out their desires in any way they like.

The Power of Play

Play is a wonderful way for children to explore the world around them and make sense of their experiences. Play can help children communicate their unconscious thoughts, and reduces stress and anxiety. Play provides opportunities to experiment and problem solve. It also helps children experience success, joy and positive emotions.

What are the benefits?

  • Improves confidence and self esteem

  • Facilitates problem solving skills and decision making

  • Supports emotional healing and growth

  • Develops social skills and relationship building

  • Promotes creativity and imaginative play

  • Releases negative emotions such as anger and frustration

  • Provides opportunities to experience success, joy and positive emotions.

What is involved?

  • An initial intake session covers your child’s and family history and any concerns you may have.

  • This is followed by a play assessment in a safe and welcoming environment. It may also include conversations with teachers, other health professionals, or classroom observations.

  • The goals of therapy and the therapeutic contract is then developed and may include session days, times and anticipated number of sessions. Some children require 10 sessions, others may need more. A midway review meeting is often booked at this stage.

  • In the final session, a post assessment may be completed and a celebration of the completion of therapy. A final meeting with parents will review the goals and parents may be supplied with further recommendations.
