Learn to Play
A practical program to build children’s imaginative play skills and improve social, emotional and cognitive learning for children from birth to 6 years.
Learn to Play
Learn to Play is a practical program designed to help develop children’s imaginative play skills. It is ideal for children with developmental delays, language disorders, autism spectrum disorders, physical disabilities and more. Through planned activities with a play therapist, children build their independent and spontaneous play behaviours.
Learn to Play focuses on:
Imaginative play—play with real toys, such as giving a doll a bath; and
Symbolic play—using one object for another, such as a block for a telephone
What are the benefits?
Sequencing ideas—putting ideas in order or retelling a story in sequence.
Oral language—describing actions, objects, thoughts and feelings
Problem solving—thinking about different ways to overcome problems
Social skills—understanding the needs and feelings of others and responding appropriately
Emotional regulation—helping children understand their feelings
Motor skills—co-ordination of bodily movements for any physical activity from handwriting to running and jumping
What is involved?
An initial intake session covers your child’s history and any concerns you may have.
This is followed by a play assessment in a safe and welcoming environment.
The Learn to Play Program is then designed and implemented over a minimum of 8 sessions. Each 1hr session is planned using play activities specifically designed to help develop and build your child’s imaginative and symbolic play abilities.
Learn to Play can also be supported at home with activities for parents and caregivers to practice at home.
